Is hot-rodding going green? General Motors thinks so and it's launching a new line of crate motors, called E-Rod, that pass California's stringent smog tests. The engines debuted Tuesday at SEMA in a 1955 Chevy customized for the show.

But enthusiasts don't need to fear — the power is still there. The first E-Rod, the LS3, makes 430 hp and will have an MSRP of $9,375. It's on sale now. GM expects to extend the E-Rod range to other crate engines. The E-Rod LS3 is 6.2 liters and is rated at 424 lb-ft of torque.

The gorgeous 1955 Chevrolet was an unexpected attention getter at SEMA. It's a 210 model upfitted with Bel-Air trim. It has a stunning white and forest green paint job, wheel components borrowed from the 2010 Camaro and an immaculate interior topped off with a wooden steering wheel.

The Chevy was worked on "in the back corners of GM," said Dave Ross, design styling manager of special builds and accessories.

Plus, the show car is a decent driver, Ross said, featuring solid handling and a nice ride.

So why do a greener crate motor?

"I'd like to be able to inspire all the builders out there to look at this car as a new way for the future," Ross said.
